Week 2

Urban sketching, on Tuesday we did a walking tour of Ancoats, the old industrial suburb of Manchester. I learned all about the area’s cotton industry and how Ancoats managed to connect itself to the rest of the world, through a simple raw material.

After the tour I decided to visit a completely different side of Manchester: Deansgate. The architectural contrast between the two areas is very drastic; however, I feel the two locations have a strong connection.

Manchester was born out of the industrial revolution, without which Manchester’s success would not have been so sustainable or extraordinary. Manchester impressive growth is due to its strong history of a hard working population. Without the success of the revolution places like Deansgate would cease to exist. The two very different locations highlight just how far Manchester has come over the years, and the impressive growth it has made.

My urban sketches show off the clean and sophisticated lines that shape Deansgate.
