Transforming a mundane material into a meaningful object

A material that stands out to me as mundane in chipboard, it’s ugly, cheap and accessible. It is used in affordable furniture and manufactured in bulk. Chipboard is often either painted over or covered with MDF and rarely exposed to the eye. Within this project, I wanted to change this perception of chipboard being ugly and create a piece that exposes and shows off its features.

By doing so I have created a functional and decorative meaningful object.

I chose to use chipboard as it is strong, easy to use and make, and has a great texture.I believe that because it has such a long history of being cheap, many people overlook it.

In order to make sure the piece was meaningful I gained inspiration from the traditional Japanese art of origami, which takes something as cheap and simple as paper and changes it into a beautiful piece of art. Which was exactly what I wanted to do with chipboard.
